18 booked for ‘honour killing’ in Abohar, suspects at large

The Moga police have registered a case against 18 persons for kidnapping and murder of a newly-wed couple whose bodies were found at Sappanwali village in Abohar on Sunday.

It was a suspected ‘honour killing’, SSP Surinderjit Singh Mand said, maintaining that the couple was brutally beaten to death and the bodies were taken away from Raunta village in Moga district Rohtash Kumar (25) belonged to a Scheduled Caste (SC) family while his wife Suman Rani (25) was from the Other Backward Class (OBC) community. Both were natives of Sappanwali village. After the court marriage, the couple had taken shelter in the house of Rohtash’s relative at Raunta village, the preliminary investigations revealed.

Kidnapping charge also pressed

  • The SSP said they had filed a case of murder, kidnapping and criminal conspiracy against family members and relatives of the deceased woman
  • Investigating officer Nirmaljit Singh said the police had raided a few places to arrest the accused, but they were absconding

The SSP said the police had registered a case of murder, kidnapping and criminal conspiracy under Sections 302, 452, 364, 148 and 149 of the IPC against 18 persons, mostly family members and relatives of the deceased woman, on the complaint of the brother-in-law of the deceased youth.

Investigating officer Nirmaljit Singh said the police had raided a few places to arrest the accused, but they were absconding. “The investigations are in progress and we will arrest them soon,” he said.

The post-mortem of the bodies was done by a medical board formed by Senior Medical officer Dr Gagandeep Singh at the Subdivisional Civil Hospital in Abohar today. Senior police officials of Abohar, Fazilka and Nihalsingh Wala were present at the hospital. The family of Rohtash Singh accepted both bodies and cremated them in the village.
