Sangrur, July 16

Two unemployed youths tried to commit suicide near the CM’s residence here on Friday night.

Both have been demanding job in Punjab Police and, along with others, have been on an indefinite protest for the past 39 days.

“Gurdeep Singh grabbed an electric cable, but there was no current in it. Then he tried to hang himself from a tree. Gurjeet Singh tried to commit suicide by consuming insecticide and was taken to the civil hospital at Sangrur. We will intensify our stir if the Punjab government fails to issue us appointment letters immediately,” said Jagdeep Singh, president of Punjab Police, 2016 waiting and 2017 verification union.

Union members claim that they had cleared all mandatory tests in 2016 and verification was done in 2017. They allege that thousands of posts of constable are vacant in Punjab Police, but the government is not letting them join. On Friday, they had announced that they would consume insecticide in case the authorities failed to meet their demand.

When this reporter tried to reach Sangrur Sadar SHO Prateek Jindal, he did not take the phone call.

“Our cops took Gurjeet to hospital on Friday night and he was later discharged. He is out of danger,” said Sukhwinderpal Singh, DSP, Rural, Sangrur.
