Sangrur, July 16
Three unemployed youths seeking jobs in the Punjab Police reportedly tried to end their lives near Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s residence here. One of them is still under treatment at a local hospital.
“Last night, Gurdeep Singh touched an electric cable, but there was an outage. Then he tried to hang himself from a tree. Another youth, Gurjeet Singh, tried to end life by suicide by consuming insecticide. He was taken to the civil hospital in Sangrur. Another protester, Jaswinder Singh, consumed insecticide. He is under treatment. We will intensify our agitation if the state government fails to issue us appointment letters immediately,” said Jagdeep Singh, one of the protesters. Job-seekers have been protesting for the past 39 days.
They said they had cleared the recruitment examination in 2016 and the documents were verified in 2017. They claimed thousands of posts of constable were vacant, but the government was not filling them.
Senior Medical Officer (SMO) Dr Baljeet Singh said Jaswinder was still under treatment and doctors had kept him under observation.
Superintendent of Police Palwinder Singh Cheema, along with other senior officers, met the protesters. He said the police had been trying to convince the protesters to end their stir.
