Faridkot, October 11

In an unprecedented move, facing the burden of around 7,500 vacant seats in 103 nursing colleges of the state, the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) has announced conducting another entrance test.

Earlier, the medical university had conducted a test on August 29 and on the basis of this, it could fill less than 350 of the total 7,800 nursing seats in 103 colleges.

Now, the BFUHS is conducting another entrance test for the vacant seats on October 24. The university has waived the fee for the test for all students who had appeared for the test on August 29 but could not qualify it.

As many of these nursing colleges are facing closure in the absence of students, they had urged the medical university and the state government to relax the eligibility criteria for admission and re-conduct a test to make admissions.

Against the availability of 7,800 nursing courses seats in the state, about 3,400 candidates had appeared in the entrance test on August 29. Among the 3,400, only 430 could qualify.

For the past four-five years, the nursing colleges are facing acute shortage of students in the state as more and more students prefer to go abroad after Class XII on a study visa.

In the last two academic sessions (2019, 2020), even after organising three walk-in counselling sessions to fill vacant nursing seats, about 5,000 vacant seats had remained unfilled in the state. Even four government nursing colleges (Faridkot, Badal, Jalalabad and Goindwal Sahib) were unable to fill all their nursing course seats which used to remain in high demand till some time back.

“Conducting the second entrance test for the nursing admissions is an effort to fill maximum of the vacant seats,” said Dr Raj Bahadur, Vice Chancellor, BFUHS.
