The State government has called an emergency meeting of the DGP, Transport Commissioner, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) State head, National Transportation Planning & Research Centre (NATPAC), Kerala Road Safety Authority officials, and District Collectors in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday in the wake of recurring fatal road accidents in Keralam in the past few days.

The meeting, to be chaired by Public Works Minister P.K. Basheer, will review in detail the causes of accidents on major roads and the national highways in the State. Emergency measures to strengthen road safety and reduce accidents, traffic control, road maintenance and safety measures will be discussed in the meeting.

The meeting will also ensure coordination of the departments concerned and give instructions for strict implementation of road safety measures. The meeting will be held at the Legislative Assembly Complex in Thiruvananthapuram at 11 a.m.

Checks in Alappuzha

Meanwhile, a meeting chaired by Alappuzha District Collector Shaji V. Nair decided to conduct an inspection to assess the assess the safety of the national highway network in the district. The inspection by the task forces will begin from three locations at 9 a.m. on Tuesday. The first team will inspect from Aroor to the south, the second team from Thottapally to the north, and the third team from Ochira to the north.

Further, a task force consisting of various departments will conduct inspections every week. A special meeting was held at the Collectorate to assess the security arrangements. The task forces and inspection teams formed as per the directives of the Supreme Court will immediately remove illegal parking, encroachments, and barricades and steps will be taken to improve the current security arrangements, the District Collector said. A meeting will also be held once a month to assess the progress of the work.
