West Asia conflict LIVE: Iran to target oil tankers in Kuwait and Bahrain in response to U.S. attack, IRGC says

Iran’s ‌Revolutionary Guards said early on Wednesday (September 9, 2026) that ships ‌in Kuwaiti ‌and ‌Bahraini ports which host Americans will be targeted ‌in response to U.S. attacks ‌on Iranian oil tankers. Iranian media on Tuesday (September 8, 2026) reported that a U.S. missile struck a tanker off the coast of Kharg Island, adding that there were no casualties.

“A small Iranian tanker was targeted by a missile attack by the American terrorist army four miles from Kharg Island. The tanker was hit by a projectile from American forces in the area of the Kharg Island anchorage,” Tasnim news agency said. The chief of staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Ali Abdollahi, on Tuesday warned Tehran would attack U.S. bases in the region if Iranian oil tankers were hit.

The U.S. military said on Tuesday (September 8, 2026) that one of its underwater drones “malfunctioned” after Iran said its forces captured an American unmanned submarine in the strategic Strait of Hormuz. “An underwater drone operated by U.S. forces malfunctioned more than a day ago. It was surveying regional waters in support of ongoing operations,” U.S. Central Command spokesperson Captain Tim Hawkins said, without mentioning whether the device was seized by Iran.
