Small transporters of Punjab demand tax waiver

Hoshiarpur, October 26

Small transporters from different districts today held a meeting in Hoshiarpur and threatened to stop operating buses from November 1 if the government didn’t fulfil the long-pending demands, including waiver of the motor-vehicle tax.

In the meeting, which was held under the chairmanship of Jasveer Singh Raja, transporters gave the ultimatum to the government to resolve their problems by October 31. Otherwise, on November 1, they would hand over the keys of their vehicles to the CM in a symbolic protest.

Raja said Roadways GMs had been authorised to check and issue challan to buses within a radius of 500 metres, which was unreasonable as Punjab Roadways and PRTC were also operators like them. They said the government was providing facilities to all sections, but ignoring the transporters.

He added for the past over one year, transporters had been running buses with 50 per cent capacity, besides no work on Saturdays and Sundays due to the lockdown. Also, they were bearing the brunt of rising fuel prices. — OC
