Faridkot, December 7

Amid the pending probe into the Behbal Kalan police firing episodes, the High Court stay on investigation against ex-Director General of Police (DGP) Sumedh Singh Saini and all other accused seeking the adjournment of all cases for indefinite period, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Tuesday claimed that the demand was aimed at delaying the trial and avoid the framing of charges against them.

“Exempting Sumedh Saini from personal appearance before the court here and staying of probe against him can’t effect the trial and the case proceedings in the court of Faridkot,” claimed the SIT, in reply to the applications of the accused on Tuesday.

The High Court hasn’t imposed any stay on the trial in the case, it added.

Opposing a contention of an SP-rank officer, Bikramjit Singh, an accused, who sought the adjournment of the case for indefinite period till the completion of the inquiry into the Behbal Kalan incident, the SIT claimed that the probe against him was concluded and the challan had already been presented against him in the court, so framing charges against him won’t be unfair.

In another application, former Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Charanjit Sharma, also an accused, on Tuesday sought the court to give directions to the SIT and the police to file a status report on the investigation carried out by them in the Behbal Kalan case to date. The court adjourned the case for December 17.
