Patiala, April 15
The recently formed Anti-Gangster Task Force of the Punjab Police, under the “Operation UK”, claimed to have cracked the murder case of kabaddi promoter Dharminder Singh Bhinda with the arrest of two main accused from Uttarakhand and Haryana.
The task force is now probing the interstate weapons racket involving these gangsters. Led by ADGP Parmod Ban, the force assigned AIG Gurmeet Chauhan and DSP Bikram Singh Brar the task to trace the accused. “Our teams nabbed the two main accused Harbir Singh Dhindsa, former student union leader, from Dehradun and Tejinder Singh Fauji from Haryana. Harbir is a close aide of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi,” said Ban, who is also the head of the Anti-Gangster Task Force.
“Bhinda ran a sports club at Daun Kalan village and was active in village politics. He was shot dead outside the university when he was trying to mediate in a clash between two groups,” the DSP said. “Harbir was on our radar. He first went to Madhya Pradesh and then shifted to Uttarakhand to evade arrest and was staying as a paying guest, when our teams nabbed him,” he added.
The operation took over 20 minutes and one of policemen in the raiding team, Rakesh Kumar, broke his arm in the scuffle, following which Harbir was nabbed.
“Now the focus is on ascertaining the links of the gangsters in various jails of the state. Moreover, close coordination will be sought from the prison officials to break the nexus running from inside the premises,” he added.
Meanwhile, AIG Gurmeet said: “We are also probing the role of persons who provided them shelter and logistics when they were on the run. Further, the weapons recovered from the accused are also under scrutiny as initial probe suggests that they were getting these from various sources.”
Earlier this week, the Patiala police had arrested Navi Sharma, Varinder Singh, Pritpal Singh and Bahadar Singh and had recovered some weapons. Sources say one of the gangsters arrested today had threatened the police too, threatening to eliminate them if they try to chase them.
