Trees axing at Faridkot Sugar Mills: On NGT orders, dept team visits site

Faridkot, June 10

Forest Department officials on Thursday took stock of axing of more than 2,000 trees on the premises of the Faridkot Cooperative Sugar Mills Ltd, a defunct unit for the past around 15 years.

Last week, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) had directed the Principal Chief Conservator of Forest and Head of the Forest Force, Punjab, to take remedial measures for the enforcement of rule of law in the alleged illegal felling of 2,058 trees on the premises of the mill after some tree lovers and environmentalists approached the tribunal, alleging illegal felling.

Led by the divisional forest officer, the department team reached the sugar mill area today to take stock of the axed trees and to measure the circumference and diameter of the standing trees. They also allotted a number to each tree. — TNS
