Patiala, July 14
Kartik, a seven-year-old boy, who was a resident of Rori kut mohalla near Chhoti Nadi here, was killed after being hit by an SUV on Thursday.
The police have taken a Mahindra Thar involved in the accident into custody. The driver of the vehicle fled the spot.
Eyewitnesses said the boy was playing at the roadside along with other children when the ‘speeding’ Thar hit him.
“The vehicle was speeding and took an abrupt turn hitting Kartik. The boy’s head was smashed. We made various attempts to call in an ambulance but to no avail. Later, the child’s mother took him to Rajindra hospital in an e-rickshaw,” they said.
They added that the boy’s father had died a few months ago.
Kotwali Assistant of Sub-Inspector Partap Singh said, “The accident took place at around 9 am. We have taken the vehicle involved in the accident into custody. We reached the site and made provisions to shift the child to Rajindra hospital at the earliest.”
He said the police were yet to apprehend the driver of the vehicle.
Kotwali Station House Officer Sarbjit Singh Cheema said the child was declared brought dead at the hospital.
Police were recording statements of eyewitnesses.
