Punjabi University has failed to feature among 200 top institutions of the country in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings, 2022, much like last year. Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology (TIET) has suffered a fall of 12 ranks, from 45th overall rank last year to 57th rank this year.
The institute has attributed its loss of points to the faculty-student ratio parameter.

The NIRF rankings, approved by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, ranks participant institutions on the parameters of teaching, learning and resources, research and professional practices, graduation outcome, outreach and inclusivity, and perception. It releases rankings in the overall category and the university category, besides colleges and other stream-related rankings.
Punjabi University has been ranked in the university category in the band of 151-200. It was in the band of 101- 150 in the overall category and 64th among universities in 2020.
The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof Arvind, said the data evaluated in this year’s rankings was from the previous academic session till March 2021. A number of factors, including its expenditure on research and faculty-student ratio, could be attributed to the university’s ranking.
A spokesperson for the university said, “Low student strength at regional centres has had an effect on the university’s ranking. The university has a lot of potential, but a number of factors, which are directly or indirectly related to the university’s finances, affected its ranking. This is the reason why we have repeatedly raising the demand for an increase in the state government grants for the university.”
The spokesperson said as a silver lining, the university was at the 25th position in the pharmacy category of institutes. It expects to better its position in the NIRF 2023 rankings.

The Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology has suffered a drop of 12 ranks this year. It, however, continues to feature among the first 50 institutions countrywide. Registrar Gurbinder Singh said, “We will try to regain our position. We have stringent eligibility conditions for hiring faculty and have witnessed a shortage of top-quality teachers. This has cost us some points on the parameter of faculty-student ratio.” He said the institute would strengthen its faculty selection programme.
