In spite of the rise in Covid cases in the district, which was the worst affected when the pandemic was at its peak in the state, residents have given a thumbs down to the precautionary dose.
There are many who have not even taken the first Covid shot yet.
As per the district Health Department, of the 9.52 lakh target population (those above 18), 8.69 lakh (91.22 per cent) have taken the first dose as of July 18, and 7.97 lakh (83.63 percent) have received both shots.
Special camps being organised
Health teams are holding special camps to cover the entire population with the first, second and booster doses. I appeal to residents to get vaccinated and prevent the spread of Covid. — Dr Parminder Kaur, Sangrur civil surgeon
As for the precautionary vaccine, only 21,344 (2.24 per cent) residents have gone for it even after repeated efforts by the department.
Sangrur block leads the district with 118 per cent first dose coverage followed by Sunam (114 per cent) and Dhuri (106 per cent).
Only Dhuri and Sunam blocks have covered 100 per cent population with both doses. “Covid is on the wane. There is no need for vaccination. I have got the first dose. When I learnt that many from my area have not got even the first shot, I did not go for the second one as people are healthy even without the
vaccination,” said Sukhwant Singh, an elderly farmer from Kartarpura village.
Meanwhile, the number of active Covid cases has increased to 20 in Sangrur, as three more patients tested positive on Monday.
Till June 2021, the district had witnessed 796 Covid deaths, of which the highest number of deaths (121) were in Sangrur block, followed by Longowal (115), Moonak (84) and Kauhrian (75).
Civil Surgeon Dr Parminder Kaur said, “Health teams are organising special camps to cover the entire population with first, second and precautionary doses. I appeal to residents to get vaccinated and prevent the spread of Covid.”
