Govt employees protest 6th Pay Commission report in Patiala

Patiala, July 29

Thousands of government employees associated with various organisations gathered in Patiala today to protest the implementation of the 6th Pay Commission recommendations.

Protesters included members of the Punjab and UT Employees and Pensioners Front, Ministerial Services Association and Vocational Teachers’ Union, besides employees of the PSPCL, medical practitioners and over 100 other groups.

They said they were being provided minimal increments in salaries after the implementation of the new rules. “The state government has been giving assurances of regularisation to contractual employees, but in vain,” they said.

The protesters said issues of various associations and employees, including providing DA arrears and regularisation, had been pending for long. They also demanded that the old pension scheme be re-implemented and the probation period that continues for three years be reduced to two.

Meanwhile, the protest from the Sirhind road to the YPS chowk brought traffic to a standstill. The protesters also tried to break the barricades, leading to a scuffle between them and cops. A number of protesters and police personnel were injured. — TNS
