Sangrur, June 16

It’s 6.40 am and a group of youngsters is waiting for AAP candidate Gurmail Singh in front of his house at Gharachon village. Coming out of his house, Gurmail announces, “will start from Bhattiwal Kalan today”. Their vehicle starts for the first destination.

On reaching the village, he greets all with folded hands and a smile. His local supporters share some problems of their village with him and he assures to look into them. With his simple, but factually correct speeches, Gurmail Singh, also known as Gurmail bai and Sarpanch sahib, has been trying to get in touch with locals for their votes.

“I hail from a simple family and I know your issues. I am a volunteer, I never expected to be honoured by the party with a ticket for parliamentary polls. But, it’s only the AAP that respects its volunteers. Has any other party given such honour to its ordinary worker,” says Gurmail during his various meetings amid slogans of “AAP zindabad” and “Gurmail bai zindabad”.

Will bepeople’s voice

You know well how I fought the Cong govt to save the land of my village. I can assure you that after becoming an MP, I will raise all your issues in Parliament for a quick solution. — Gurmail Singh

After finishing his speech, he leaves for the next destination as he has a long list of villages to visit, including Nariangarh, Basiarkh, Kapial, Retgarh, Rampura, Bhawanigarh grain market, Jhaneri, Batriana, Bhindra and Balian.

Whenever he reaches any village, he tries to talk to maximum residents personally. Whenever anyone approaches him, he meets them with due courtesy.

He joined the AAP in 2013 and became its circle chief in 2015. In 2018, he became sarpanch of his native Gharachon village, which is the AAP stronghold. In 2021, Gurmail became AAP district chief. During the tenure of the Congress government from 2017 to 2022, he faced many problems as the then government wanted to take over panchayat land in his village for the construction of a medical college without the consent of locals.

Since he belongs to a village, his speeches in Punjabi rural ascent are helping him get noticed among a majority of voters.
