Abohar farmers protest canal closure, commuters hassled

Abohar, June 15

Farmers under the banner of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha on Wednesday continued to protest for the second day and blocked four roads that connect Abohar with Rajasthan.

The protest was held as the Irrigation Department announced to close Lambi minor (sub canal) for seven days for the repair works.

The farmers staged a dharna on the interstate roads near Gidderanwali, Rajpura, Bazidpur Bhoma and Dodewala villages. Hundreds of four-wheelers were diverted to alternative routes, but heavy vehicles carrying supplies, including essentials from Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat were stuck in the jam.

Sukhwinder Rajewal of the Bharti Kisan Union said, “Last month, Sirhind feeder canal had developed a breach and farmers had to fight to get the water released. Now, the department has again suspended the supply for one week.”

Irrigation Department officials said sub canals were being closed on rotation basis as the main feeder was unable to carry water as per the specification after breach in the Sirhind feeder canal. Only Lambi minor has been shut for a week, farmers should not pay heed to rumours, officials said.
