Chandigarh, January 4
The state seems to be heading towards the third wave of Covid as the number of active cases is expected to increase by almost 100 times over the next 10 days.
As per the statistical models prepared by the health department, the number of active Covid cases is likely to rise to 35,000 by January 16. At present, the number is 2,686. Dr Rajesh Bhaskar, state’s nodal officer for Covid, confirmed that the number of cases would increase by several times.
In the last week of December, the number of active cases was limited to just 300 in the state, but it started increasing in the last one week. A week ago, the health department had said that the daily number of fresh cases was likely to hit 1,000 by January 5, but the state touched the figure a day in advance on Tuesday. The state reported 1,027 fresh cases and two deaths — one each from Patiala and Sangrur — today.
