Jalandhar, July 20
Despite heavy rainfall since this morning, residents of Adampur on Wednesday held a massive protest on the Jalandhar-Hoshiarpur highway over delay in completion of the under-construction flyover and no service lanes.
Thousands of commuters, who were to travel on the route, remained harassed throughout the day as the road jam, which started from 10 am continued till 5 pm. Though the route between the two cities was given diversions, the longer detour doubled commuters travel time.
Holding umbrellas, residents supported by local Congress leaders braved heavy rain to lodge their protest and raise slogans against the government.
Even street vendors, whose daily sales have been badly affected for the past nearly six months, joined the protest. The work on the flyover, which has been lying stalled, is adversely affecting daily lives of residents.
Congress MLA Sukhwinder Kotli said he had held a meeting with Punjab PWD Minister and officials of the department concerned for expediting flyover work and they had assured him that the matter would be taken up with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, but to no avail. Residents have given an ultimatum that if the pending work of the flyover did not resume by July 25, they would be forced to start an indefinite protest on the site.
