In the 2017 elections, the constituency was in focus as a large section of residents demonstrated seeking shifting of the Bhagtanwala dumping ground from the city, prompting political parties to use it as a poll plank.
Akali leader Inderbir Singh Bolaria shifted his loyalty to the Congress and promised residents that the dump would be shifted on a priority basis. Former Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh included the demand in the poll manifesto and FM Manpreet Singh Badal promised a hospital for chest diseases.
Hoping for a change, voters gave their verdict in favour of Bolaria, who won with a handsome margin. Almost five years on, Bhagtanwala residents feel betrayed. The dump still remains a problem.
Prabjeet Singh from Sultanwind village said the historic village in the urban constituency didn’t have proper sewerage and water supply system. The sitting MLA says work on a beautification project is under way and the outer ring road is being redeveloped.
