Ludhiana, July 11

The Court of Judicial Magistrate Harsimranjit Kaur on Monday sent the Lok Insaaf Party chief and former MLA, Simarjit Singh Bains, and four other accused in the rape case of a 44-year-old woman in three-day police remand.

Around 10.15 am, Bains and four other accused — Paramjit Singh Pamma, Baljinder Kaur, Jasbir Kaur, alias Bhabhi, and Pardeep Kumar, alias Gogi Sharma — surrendered before the court.

The court intimated the police station concerned. Thereafter, Inspector Madhu Bala reached the courtroom with the team and formally arrested the ex-MLA and other accused. At noon, the court started hearing the arguments in the case.

Additional Public Prosecutor Sachin Jangra requested the court to grant seven-day police remand of all accused as their custodial interrogation was necessary to go to the root of the case and recover the cellphone and other things.

On the other hand, the defence lawyer termed it to be a false and politically motivated case. He urged the court that Bains should not be handcuffed at any stage by the police, as he served as the MLA twice and always fought for the protection of people’s rights. Moreover, no useful purpose would be served, as a chargesheet had already been filed against all accused.

Later, Bains alleged false implication. He said the complainant’s counsel contested the poll against him. “So, I have been framed in a pre-planned manner,” he alleged.

Recently, the court had attached the property of Bains. Apart from the ex-MLA, the property of Paramjit Singh Pamma at Alamgir village was also attached. Bains was declared a proclaimed offender on April 12, 2022.

The FIR was registered against him with the orders of a local court in July 2021. The chargesheet was filed against Bains before the court in December 2021. At that time, none of the accused were arrested. On November 16, 2020, the woman had moved a handwritten application to the Commissioner of Police, Ludhiana, for registration of an FIR. Balwinder Bains, ex-MLA and brother of Simarjit Bains, claimed that truth would come out. It was all a politically motivated conspiracy to end the political career of his brother, he said.
