Balachaur: Endless wait for Kandi canal

IN this Gujjar-dominated constituency, voters have one thing to ask of the sitting legislator: why his pre-poll promise of making Kandi canal operational have been hanging fire till now?

The canal project was launched decades ago.

The voters say the groundwater level is declining rapidly in the Kandi area and farmers face water scarcity. Hardeep Singh, a farmer from Singhpur village, said: “Hundreds of crores have been spent on the canal project, but it hasn’t provided farmers with a single drop of water. The objective was to irrigate areas along the Shivalik foothills in Hoshiarpur and Nawanshahr districts. The Phase I was completed in 1998-99, but the work on Phase II is still pending.”

The menace of wild animals is another major problem. Of the three regions in the constituency — Bet, Kandi and Dhahan — only Bet has been developed. Kandi and Dhahan have been crying for attention for long.
