Chandigarh, August 3

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann today told his party MLAs to remain proactive on public issues without ruffling the feathers of officers or senior government functionaries.

The MLAs have been categorically asked not to go in for “aggressive raids” on government offices and institutions as these do not serve any public good, but often become a source of embarrassment for the government.

Advice comes after Faridkot fiasco

The warning from the Chief Minister to his party colleagues came in the wake of the fiasco in Faridkot and the humiliation of Vice Chancellor of Baba Farid University Dr Raj Bahadur, which ultimately led to his resignation.

The warning from the Chief Minister to his party colleagues came in the wake of the fiasco in Faridkot and the humiliation of Vice-Chancellor of Baba Farid University, Dr Raj Bahadur, which ultimately led to his resignation.

The “advice in humility” to the party MLAs was given in three meetings that Mann held with them (in batches of 17-22 each) all through the day today. Mann is reported to have told the MLAs in no unclear terms that both the Executive and Legislature are important pillars of democracy and a perfect balance needs to struck between them for the progress of the state and prosperity of its people.

No minister or officer was present in the meeting where Mann himself sought suggestions from MLAs to ensure good governance and noted the suggestions he got.

Sources say that the CM also asked the MLAs to list three projects that they wanted to start in their constituencies other than the development works that are already on. He asked them to ensure that the benefit of the pro-people and development-oriented schemes of the state government percolate to the lowest level of society.
