Chandigarh, January 28
Punjab’s former DGP Sumedh Singh Saini today moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking — among other things — the quashing of chargesheet dated January 15 in connection with the Behbal Kalan police firing incident in which two protesters were killed on October 14, 2015.
The special investigating team had nominated Saini as an accused in the matter.
Bid to sabotage probe: Behbal victim’s kin
Bathinda: The family of a Behbal Kalan firing case victim has alleged the accused are trying to sabotage the probe by seeking ouster of IGP Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh from the case. Addressing a press conference, the family members urged the state government to ensure the IGP continued with the probe so that they could get justice. TNS
As Saini’s petition filed against the State of Punjab and other respondents came up for preliminary hearing before the Bench of Justice Meenakshi I Mehta, senior counsel APS Deol and Himmat Singh Deol on his behalf contended similar relief had been sought in two connected writ petitions filed by Gurdeep Singh and Param Raj Singh Umaranangal.
The matters had been ordered by the Chief Justice to be listed before the Bench of Justice Girish Agnihotri vide order dated January 5. The cases were to come up for hearing on February 1. As such, the present matter was required to be listed along with the two writ petitions.
Taking a note of the plea, Justice Mehta directed that the listing of the present matter with the other two petitions. — TNS
