Sangrur, June 17

After reaching Longowal with other senior leaders, Kewal Dhillon, BJP candidate for the Sangrur Lok Sabha bypoll, takes a look at the audience to see whether all chairs are full. He meets leaders with folded hands with “Jai Shri Ram”. Enthused after seeing good attendance, he meets local leaders and starts to interact with all.

“The law and order situation is worsening in the state. Murders are taking place daily, robberies have increased and gangsters have increased their activities in Punjab. It’s happening only because the government has failed to perform its duty,” says Dhillon.

Apart from law and order, Dhillon has repeatedly been raising the issue of deteriorating financial situation. After visiting Longowal, Dhillon heads for Cheema Mandi, Beer Kalan villages and some wards of Sunam city.

Being a businessman, Dhillon knows the importance of industry and he never misses a chance to raise the issue of lack of industrial growth in Punjab.

Well aware that many want to ask him why he left the Congress, Dhillon on his own explains his decision. “I want to share with you that why I chose BJP? After analysing all parties, I reached the conclusion that only the BJP and PM Narendra Modi can help Punjab become prosperous again.”

“I had detailed discussions with senior BJP leaders. I got to know from them that PM Modi wants to sanction new developmental projects for Punjab, but we need to show our support to him by electing the BJP candidate in this byelection,” says Dhillon.

A day after he joined the BJP, the party fielded him for the bypoll. Many other leaders were in the race for the ticket, but his nomination came as big surprise to many.

A former MLA from Barnala, Dhillon had remained senior vice-president of the Punjab Congress and also a member of the All India Congress Committee. In 2019, he had contested the Lok Sabha election on Congress ticket from Sangrur against Bhagwant Mann.

“Our area is backward as previous governments failed to bring big industry here. I have spoken to senior leaders in the central government. I plan to get an international airport approved for Sangrur so that area starts progressing,” says Dhillon.

In the same breath, he criticises Mann for mocking him for his announcement of a new airport. “Mann has claimed that Sangrur residents do not have proper bus stand, but I am promising airport. I want to convey to Mann that I have big plans for Sangrur and I will fulfil my promises,” says Dhillon. Since he has fought many elections, Dhillon is able to read the mood of audience quickly. Interacting with elderly, youth and children, he keeps on asking them about their problems and assures help on being elected.
