Car with bodies of four of family found in canal

Faridkot, July 22

The bodies of four family members who went missing on June 11 were fished out from Sirhind Feeder canal in Faridkot today morning.

The victims — Bharamjit Singh, his wife Rupinder Kaur, their 13-year-old daughter Mannatpreet Kaur and 11-year-old son Rajdeep — were found in a car, which became visible after the water-level reduced in the canal.

Bharamjit worked as a clerk at Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital here. He had around Rs 1.8 lakh, which he had collected from the patients and their attendants on June 11, in lieu of the services offered in the medical college.

Sources in the medical college revealed that the amount was not deposited by him with the college authorities. As it was Sunday on June 12, we were expecting that Bharamjit would deposit the money on June 13, said a senior functionary of the medical college.

Earlier, on the complaint of Mohinderpal Singh, father-in-law of Bharamjit, the police had registered a missing complaint.

In the past 40 days, the police had made no sincere effort to trace my missing family members, alleged Mohinderpal.

“I met Gurdit Singh (Investigating officer) numerous times. He used to say that cellphones of my daughter and son-in-law were switched off,” he said.

The Investigating officer said there was no headway in the probe as they could not contact the duo. Accusing a staffer of the medical college of harassing his son-in-law, Mohinderpal and his relatives today staged a protest. DSP Jasmeet Singh said they were probing the matter and the bodies had been sent for the post-mortem.
