The one-third ministers in the present state government are not even graduates. A perusal of the affidavits filed by the leaders while contesting the Assembly elections in 2017 shows that of the total 18 ministers, one is under-Matric, three are matriculates, one has studied up to Class XII and one dropped out after BA-I.

Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi is the lone masters degree holder among all. He has done BA-LLB from Panjab University and MBA from Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar. Further, Manpreet Singh Badal is the lone minister to have studied abroad. He has done LLB (Hons) from London in 1987.

Further, four out of seven new ministers inducted in the Cabinet are not even graduates — Sangat Singh Gilzian, (studied up to Class IX), Amrinder Singh Raja Warring and Rana Gurjeet Singh (matriculates) and Raj Kumar Verka (dropped out after BA-I).

Similarly, among the 11 old faces in the Cabinet, two are not graduates. Razia Sultana is a matriculate and Deputy Chief Minister Om Parkash Soni has studied up to Class XII. Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria has done BSc (non-medical) and Vijay Inder Singla has done BE (computer science). The other ministers — Deputy CM Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Brahm Mohindra, Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa, Aruna Chaudhary, Bharat Bhushan Ashu, Pargat Singh, Randeep Singh and Gurkirat Singh Kotli — are graduates.

A political expert said apart from the capabilities of the MLAs, their educational qualification, too, should be considered while being appointed as ministers.
