Cop’s car runs over 2 women in Jalandhar, 1 dead

Jalandhar, October 18

A 22-year-old woman was killed on the spot while her friend was grievously injured when they were run over by a vehicle driven by a cop at Dhanowali village on the Jalandhar-Phagwara highway here on Monday morning.

The deceased has been identified as Navjot Kaur of Dhanowali village while her injured friend Mamta (30), of the same village, is currently in the ICU at a city hospital.

Inspector Amrit Pal, who hails from Hoshiarpur and is currently posted at Harike Pattan, was driving a Brezza car (PB07-BU0112). Hours after the incident, a case was lodged against the cop at the Jalandhar Cantonment police station. Angry villagers, however, blocked the Jalandhar-Phagwara highway for hours and lifted the blockade late in the afternoon. Notably, Navjot’s father is a daily earner with meagre earnings and mother a homemaker. She has four sisters, one of whom is handicapped. The family was in shock after getting the news of her death. Neighbours, however, said the household largely survived on Navjot’s earnings as her father rarely used to be home as he was ill.

Meanwhile, the CCTV footage of the incident, which was released this morning, showed a white Brezza car running over two women. The accused was at the police station till the filing of this report. — TNS
