Crores spent, Ghaggar repair work 'poor'

Sangrur, April 17

The state government has spent crores to strengthen and repair embankment of seasonal rivulet Ghaggar. Meanwhile, area residents have expressed dissatisfaction and alleged misuse of funds on repair works.

Recently, senior officials of several departments visited Ghaggar to take quick flood preventive measures. Sangrur Deputy Commissioner Jitendra Jorwal pulled up and warned officials of strict action if they failed to undertake strengthening of Ghaggar banks properly this year.

Many residents hoped to see required strengthening of Ghaggar banks this year as CM Bhagwant Mann had earlier visited their area several times when he was a Member of Parliament and assured them all help in this regard.

“Officials have been making repeated claims of having spent crores on Ghaggar works. Every year, residents of Salemgarh, Moonak, Hamigarh, Surjan Bhaini and Bhundan Bhaini villages have been pooling Rs 200 per acre to strengthen the Ghaggar embankment. Had there been any proper fund utilisation, we would not have to contribute money. The state government should immediately order high-level inquiry into misuse of funds,” demanded Kabul Singh Sekhon, an area residents’ committee member, formed to arrange money to strengthen Ghaggar banks.

Meanwhile, area residents shared their woes with the DC and other officials and requested them to take quick action before the start of the rainy season this year. — TNS
