Delhi BJP leader files police complaint against Sangrur MP Simranjit Mann for calling Bhagat Singh ‘terrorist’

New Delhi, July 19

A police complaint has been filed by a Delhi BJP leader against newly elected Lok Sabha member from Punjab’s Sangrur constituency, Simranjit Singh Mann, for his alleged remarks equating freedom fighter Bhagat Singh to a “terrorist”.

On July 15, Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) leader Mann triggered a controversy by saying that “Bhagat Singh had killed a young English officer, he had killed an Amritdhari Sikh constable Channan Singh. He had hurled a bomb into the national assembly at that time. Now, you tell me whether Bhagat Singh was a terrorist or not”.

Delhi BJP Mahila Morcha General Secretary Teena Kapoor Sharma in her complaint to the Delhi Police, a copy of which is with The Tribune, said, “I am deeply hurt by the statements of Simranjit Singh Maan towards our revolutionary freedom fighter, Bhagat Singh, who sacrificed his life at a young age for our country. His statement for our freedom fighter is an anti-national act and affects every individual of the country.”

Talking to The Tribune she said, “On my complaint, the police have taken the matter seriously and began an investigation. I hope that my complaint will be converted into an FIR,” she said.

Officials said no FIR has been registered yet, as preliminary investigation has to be done before.

Calling the legendary freedom fighter a true son of soil, Sharma said, she was “astonished to see that the AAP government in Punjab has not taken any action in the matter, except for a few tweets against Mann’s remarks by the ruling party leaders, including Raghav Chaddha”.

Incidentally, when the complaint was being lodged against Mann at the Parliament Street police station in New Delhi, nearly a kilometre away in the Parliament House, he was taking oath in Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla’s chamber in the name of the Constitution.
