Digitise quality checks: Punjab rice millers

Ropar, August 29

millers demanded digitisation of quality checks to root out the alleged corruption in the Food Corporation of India (FCI). Tarsem Lal Saini, chief, Punjab Millers’ Association and Federation of All India Millers’ Association, said taking such steps would also end the harassment of rice millers at the hands of unscrupulous elements in the FCI.

Saini initiated a campaign titled ‘Jago’ to create awareness among millers about the challenges they would face in future. He said the Centre had started a pilot project in this regard and set up laboratories, but these were not put to use properly. The policy to accept rice from a miller was 50-year-old, he said. The quality of the produce is checked by an Inspector-level official through manual system, thus leaving a miller at the mercy of officials. “The FCI needs to bring reforms in this field by setting up digital labs,” he said. — TNS
