Ex-MLA Bains' brother held in rape case

Ludhiana, July 2

The Ludhiana police have arrested Karamjit Singh, a brother of former MLA and Lok Insaaf Party chief Simarjit Singh Bains, in a rape case.

While Simarjit is the key accused, six others had been booked for hatching a conspiracy. In April, the court had declared Simarjit and six others — Karamjit Singh, Pardeep Kumar, Baljinder Kaur, Jasbir Kaur, Sukhchain Singh and Paramjit Singh as proclaimed offenders. Later, the Ludhiana police had pasted their wanted posters on the walls in Shimlapuri near the Lok Insaaf Party’s office.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Rural) RS Brar said acting on a tip-off, they arrested Karamjit and raids were on to nab the remaining accused.

“Karamjit tried to befool the police by stating that he was Amarjit. Simarjit will also be arrested soon,” said the JCP.

The complaint was lodged by a 44-year-old woman in 2020. The FIR was registered on the directions of the court in July 2021 and the chargesheet was filed in December 2021. — TNS
