Farmers resent water crisis in tail-end areas in Fazilka

Resentment is brewing among farmers in Fazilka district over scarcity of water in tail-end villages here.

Hardip Dhakka, sarpanch of Khanpur village, said areas on the tail end of non-perennial Kabulshah, Bandiwala, Kheowali and New Lakhewali minor canals had been facing water shortage. Water was not being released into minor canals to their optimum capacity, he said. Dhakka said the canals had not been cleaned properly.

Sandeep Kumar, sarpanch of Mandi Hazoor Singh village, said water was required to irrigate and cultivate cotton, paddy and guar crops in these villages as the sub-soil water was not fit for the purpose. He alleged if water was not released immediately, the standing crop would die soon.

The affected villages include Bareka, Muradwala, Lakhewali Dhab, Shahtirwala, Tillanwali, Bandiwala, Sivana, Kerian, Khanpur, Sabuana, Hiranwali, Jandwala Kharta, Odian, Churiwala Chisti and Chananwala, Mandi Hazoor Singh.

Jagtar Singh, Executive Engineer, Canals, said earlier there was a shortage of water upstream, but now water had been released into the canals and it would reach the tail end in a couple of days.
