Deputy CM Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa directed completion of work of the special girdawari immediately to assess the actual damage to the cotton crop affected by the pink bollworm infestation.
He directed the Financial Commissioner (Development) to ensure that affected farmers be compensated before Diwali after completion of the special girdawari. In a press communiqueacute; released here today, the Deputy CM said after the attack of pink locust on the cotton crop in the Malwa belt, the affected areas were visited. After this, he and Agriculture Minister Randeep Singh Nabha called a meeting with the farmers’ leaders and issued special girdawari orders.
Nabha said from the next season, ‘mating disruption technology’ would be introduced. High incidence of pink bollworm was reported on BG11 variety in Malwa, which had adversely affected the yield. Most of the farmers had uprooted the crop and demanded compensation. He directed all officials to introduce the mating disruption technology, which was considered the gold standard in crop protection. — TNS
