Gurdaspur, July 16
Three ASIs were placed under suspension after members of two families levelled allegations of torture against their wards.
SSP Harjit Singh said he had suspended Kashmir Singh, Sat Pal and Harjit Singh after he received reports that the three were involved in torturing Mukesh, a resident of Behrampur road, and Kaushal, a resident of Bajwa colony.
The irate relatives held a protest against the police in front of the city police station. The protest was called off after DSP (City) Riputapan Singh assured the kin that action would be taken against the erring cops.
Both Mukesh and Kaushal claimed that they were picked up from their houses. “The cops came in a private car and asked us to hop in, saying that they needed some information about an old case. We were taken to the police residential quarters, where we were beaten up. We repeatedly told the three ASIs that we were not involved in any crime in the past whatsoever, but they kept on beating us. Is this how the police function? It seems the cops can round up anybody on one pretext or the other and start thrashing him or her,” said Mukesh.
There were allegations against SHO Gurmeet Singh that he was also involved.
The SSP, however, said the SHO’s role was being looked into. “I have given him a warning. If any proof surfaces during the inquiry about his role, he will be immediately transferred to the police lines,” he said. — TNS
