High Court dismisses Badals’ plea in fraud case

Chandigarh, August 27

The Punjab and Haryana High Court today dismissed a petition filed against the proceedings of a Hoshiarpur court that had summoned former Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal along with senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leaders Sukhbir Singh Badal and Daljit Singh Cheema in a case in which allegations of filing false affidavits before the Election Commission (EC) of India had been

levelled against them.

With the petition being dismissed, the stay imposed earlier on the trial before the lower court also gets vacated. Balwant Singh Khera, national vice-president of the Socialist Party of India, had filed a criminal complaint against the SAD leaders for conspiracy, fraud and forgery under various provisions of the IPC.

He had alleged they had given false affidavits to the EC that the SAD was following secular, democratic and socialist values even as they had been contesting elections for various gurdwara management committees. He had also averred they had concealed the old constitution of the party. — TNS
