High Court notice to state over security cover

Chandigarh, July 21

The Punjab and Haryana High Court today issued notice of motion to Punjab on two petitions filed by senior Akali leader Sohan Singh Thandal and BJP leader Mohinder Kaur Josh for the restoration of their security cover.

Taking up the matter, Justice Raj Mohan Singh of the High Court also fixed the matters for further hearing on Friday. Both the petitioners contended that they were unable to carry on with their duties due to the sudden withdrawal of the security and owing to the consistent threat perception.

In fact, they were unable to freely move in the public areas, “much less freely indulge in social causes” since the withdrawal of the security and were constantly facing apprehension of an untoward incident.

The respondents proceeded illegally and unilaterally to withdraw the security in utter ignorance of their own policy and without conducting fresh risk assessment, affording an opportunity of hearing or giving notice to them. Representations were sent to the respondents to restore the security cover earlier provided to them. But till date no action, much less requisite action, had been taken by the respondents.
