Hoshiarpur, April 16
A 25-year-old hearing and speech impaired Hoshiarpur girl Diya, who had committed suicide by jumping from Delhi’s Akshardham metro station a day before (Thursday), was cremated at Shivpuri on the Hariana-Hoshiarpur Road this afternoon.
It must be probed thoroughly under which circumstances she had taken the extreme step. The Delhi Police should investigate the matter thoroughly and if there’s anyone responsible for it, strict action should be taken against the culprit. Also financial aid should be extended to the family which is living in utter poverty — Sandeep Sharma, President, Disabled Persons Welfare Society
Her parents brought her body here on late Friday night from Delhi. On Saturday, her last rites were performed. On the occasion, a large number of people were present and everyone who was known to the family was surprised that why Diya would have taken such an extreme step. Diya’s father and mother are speech and hearing impaired too while her younger sister is just nine years old. The relatives present during the cremation said Diya was the major breadwinner of the family and her father is a tailor. She used to do a job in Gurugram and had lost the job recently.
It was said that she had joined an international online marketing company a few days ago, but was terminated, so she was disturbed. Disabled Persons Welfare Society president Sandeep Sharma, who was present during her cremation, said it was very unfortunate that Diya had committed suicide.
“It must be probed thoroughly under which circumstances she had taken the extreme step. The Delhi Police should investigate the matter thoroughly and if there’s anyone responsible for it, strict action should be taken against the culprit. Also financial aid should be extended to the family which is living in utter poverty,” said Sharma.
Diya’s uncle Vinod Kumar, who had come from Yamunanagar, told this correspondent that no relatives knew that she was working somewhere or not. “We have come to know about it only on Thursday night when we got the information regarding her suicide in Delhi,” he said.
The neighbours present during the cremation including Maninder Singh and Sohan Lal have urged the Delhi Government and the police to ascertain the reason behind the Diya’s death so that her family could get justice.
They also put forth a demand before the Hoshiarpur administration to provide financial help to Diya’s family because they had lost their major breadwinner.
