Members of four different unions from across Punjab converged here on Sunday and tried to break police barricade to gherao the local residence of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. However, police foiled their repeated attempts, leading to heated arguments between both sides.

“In December 2021, the then Congress government had announced to recruit 5994 ETT and TET teachers, but till date Punjab government has not started the process. Apart from it, we are also demanding the quashing of other states quota as priority should be given to Punjab candidates,” said Balwinder Singh, a protester.

Members of Overage Teachers Union, New B.Ed and TET Pass Union, ETT and TET 5994 Union and Adarsh School Teachers Union were part of the protest.

Ranbir Singh Nadampur, district president, Sangrur, of Overage Teachers Union, said they had cleared TET in 2017.

“But previous government did not start recruitment and we have turned overage. We are demanding age relaxation so that we could also apply for government jobs,” he said.

Protesters raised slogans against Punjab government and repeatedly tried to break police barricades to reach in front of the residence of Punjab CM. But a strong chain of barricades and policemen thwarted all attempts of protesters.

“We have come here since morning, but none has come to meet us. The issue of Adarsh schools is very serious and Punjab government should at least listen to our grievances once,” said members of Adarsh School Teachers Union Punjab.

Later they ended their protest after getting an appointment for meeting the senior authorities on July 22.
