Kapurthala: Man sets himself on fire in police station

Kapurthala, April 14

A 35-year-old man on Thursday evening attempted a self-immolation bid in the Kapurthala City Police Station here. He poured kerosene on himself and then set himself alight. Getting over 80 per cent burns, he was given preliminary treatment at the Kapurthala Civil Hospital before being referred to Amritsar hospital.

The victim has been identified as Ravi Gill of Mehtabgarh area of Kapurthala. He was reportedly insisting for the arrest of some persons, including a woman, who were allegedly threatening him for the past few weeks. Since the police did not act on the matter, he resorted to set himself alight in the police station compound itself.

Inspector of City Police Station Talwinder Kumar said: “I was away. I cannot exactly say what has happened.”

Kapurthala SSP Harish Dayama said: “The victim and his wife had dispute with someone. They had got lodged an FIR that some persons, including a woman, were forcing them to resort to some illegal work. A counter FIR had been lodged against the victim too on the complaint from the accused in the first FIR. It was a complex case into which our teams were still looking into when the victim started pressing for a quick action. Our SHO was away in another case when he came to the police station. Not finding him there, he went out towards the road and attempted to burn himself. Our DSP has started investigating into the matter.”
