Muktsar, April 16

The slow pace of wheat lifting from mandis is set to become a cause for concern in Muktsar district.

A total of 1,39,987 MT wheat has been purchased in the district, but only 32,769 MT has been lifted so far (23 per cent).

The stacks of wheat bags can be seen throughout the Muktsar grain market.

A farmer who reached mandi with his produce said: “If the situation doesn’t improve in the next two days, there will be hardly any space left to accommodate more produce. The officials concerned should speed up the procurement process.”

Some commission agents said one-day strike by the procurement agencies’ inspectors and confusion over the shrivelled grain has led to this situation.

A perusal of the records revealed that 1,69,332 MT wheat has arrived in the mandis and just 222 MT was purchased by private firms in the district.

Meanwhile, Muktsar District Food and Civil Supplies Controller Himanshu Kukkar said: “The situation will improve soon. A large number of trucks and tractor-trailers are occupied in loading rice on a special train of the Food Corporation of India.”
