‘List 20 bookshops’: Punjab cracks down on schools

Chandigarh, April 12

On the directions of Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann, the Education Department on Tuesday ordered all private schools to display a list of shops dealing in books and uniform to allow parents to have the option for buying these items from any of the prescribed shops.

The schools will have to display the list of at least three shops in towns and 20 in cities and it will also be shared with the District Education Officers (DEOs) concerned, said an official spokesperson.

The move followed complaints by parents that they were unduly harassed by the school managements to buy books and uniform from a particular shop.

Education Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer directed the DEOs to form compliance teams to verify the list of shops by conducting random inspections and deal strictly against any violations. The minister further ordered the district regulatory bodies headed by the DCs to act on complaints against private schools. He said it had been brought to his notice despite strict instructions from the CM, a few private schools were violating these orders. — TNS
