LIT ex-chief booked for ‘illegal sale’ of plots

Chandigarh July 28

The Vigilance Bureau (VB) today registered a criminal case against Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT) former chairman Raman Balasubramanium and five others on the charge of illegal sale of plots, including some in the name of dead persons.

The VB stumbled upon the scandal while investigating another corruption case involving an Executive Officer and a Junior Assistant of the LIT. The other accused are LIT’s Executive Officer Kuljit Kaur, Subdivisional Officer (SDO) Ankit Narang, sales clerk Parveen Kumar, clerk Gagandeep and personal assistant Sandeep Sharma.

Of the six accused, Sharma has been arrested.

All six have been booked under Sections 7, 7A, 8, 12 and 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, and Sections 409, 420, 467, 471 and 120-B of the IPC.

A VB spokesperson said the bureau had arrested LIT Junior Assistant Harmit Singh and Executive Officer Kuljit Kaur while accepting Rs 10,000 in bribe on July 14.

During the investigation of the bribery case, it came to light that LIT officials had allegedly allotted plots in Nawanshahr and Ludhiana to unauthorised persons in lieu of bribe. The spokesperson said some of the allottees had died and their plots had been allotted to some unauthorised persons in violation of rules.
