GAME OVER: Saudi Arabia 2-1 Argentina
Saudi Arabia have done it!
This will go down as a historic win against Lionel Messi’s Argentina, who were one of the pre-tournament favourites.
Argentina had the ball in the back of Saudi Arabia’s net four times before half-time and looked dominant — but three were ruled offside, leaving just Messi’s penalty to put them 1-0 at half-time.
But Saudi Arabia came out roaring in the second half, with Al Shehri equalising with a scuffled shot.
Al Dawsari then scored a historic screamer to put the Saudis in front.
Argentina surged forward again and again but could not find the break they needed in a game that was played at hectic pace in front of the noisiest crowd we’ve heard in Qatar so far.
Messi’s world cup is off to a bad start. Jubilation for the travelling Saudi fans.
