Lambi/Muktsar, July 18

There is only one ‘shiksha provider’ for 69 students of Classes I to V at Government Primary Smart School at Sehna Khera village in the Lambi Assembly segment. As for the pre-primary classes, a single education volunteer teaches 18 students.

The only teacher posted at the school is on a maternity leave, say sources.

There are days when ‘shiksha’ provider Baljinder Kumar is unavailable because of some official work. On such days, either students teach each other or the education volunteer teaches all students in a single classroom.

More teachers will be posted

Students say that sometimes, a student of Class V teaches Class IV and a pupil of Class IV teaches Class III.

Village residents say there is nothing smart about the school. “Students belonging to below poverty line families study in the school. They should be the priority of the government. Unfortunately, the authorities don’t seem bothered about their future,” said Gurjant Singh, a village resident.

Kumar said, “No doubt, the studies are getting affected due to the shortage of teachers. Sometimes, I am busy in sending official emails and letters. This impacts the studies. Whenever possible, I seek the help of the education volunteer, but she, too, is burdened with work.”

Prabhjot Kaur, District Education Officer (Primary), Muktsar, said: “As per guidelines, the school must have four teachers. The transfer of teachers are underway and more teachers will be posted there soon.”
