Man beaten to death in Punjab's Kapurthala over sacrilege allegations

Chandigarh, December 19

A day after a man was beaten to death for an alleged sacrilege bid at the Golden Temple in Amritsar, another person was killed for allegedly disrespecting ‘Nishan Sahib’ (Sikh religious flag) at a gurdwara here on Sunday morning.

Some residents of village Nizampur claimed that the man disrespected the Nishan Sahib and tried to run away but was caught after a chase.

According to police, the man was beaten to death.

Punjab’s Director General of Police Siddharth Chattopadhyaya confirmed the report in a tweet.

“I have taken serious note of the unfortunate incidents in Amritsar and Kapurthala. Any attempt to violate the communal harmony in the state will be dealt with a firm hand. Stern action will be taken against all those disturbing the law and order in Punjab #PunjabStandsTogether,” his tweet said on Sunday.

The development comes a day after a man was beaten to death at the Golden Temple for attempted sacrilege. The man, whose identity is yet unclear, jumped over the railings at the sanctum sanctorum and sprinted toward the ‘saroop’ (copy) of the Guru Granth sahib but was caught before he could defile it, officials said.

Police have booked the man, who died soon after the assault, for attempted murder (because the Guru Granth Sahib is considered a living entity) and outraging religious sentiments under the Indian Penal Code. — Agencies
