Muktsar, September 22

The Department of Social Security and Women and Child Development has given rotten soya chunks to some anganwari centres in Muktsar district which are to be distributed among pregnant women and those having kids up to six months.

An anganwari worker said, “Our centre has got rotten soya chunks, but fearing departmental action, I can’t speak. I have conveyed it to our employee union leaders.”

Chhinderpal Kaur, president, All-Punjab Anganwari Employees’ Union, Muktsar district, said, “Some centres have got rotten soya chunks last month. We came to know it now when we opened the packets to distribute these among women. These are unfit for human consumption. The department should replace these at the earliest.”

On this, Rattandeep Kaur, District Programme Officer, Muktsar, said, “After getting the complaints of rotten soya chunks from some anganwari centres, we have sought a report from other centres as well. Besides, we have stopped the distribution and conveyed it to supplying agency Markfed as well. The Markfed officials have assured us of replacing the soya chunks.”

In May, the department had distributed wet sugar having lumps to supply among kids of needy families and pregnant women. The sugar was replaced only after The Tribune highlighted the matter.
