Sangrur, April 15
Sangrur Nagar Council authorities have failed in containing the construction of illegal commercial buildings in residential areas of Sangrur city. In this regard, a team of the vigilance wing of the local government department conducted inspection of illegal buildings on the telephone exchange road recently.
Though members of the team refused to share details, sources said the team collected details of around 15 commercial buildings which were constructed in violation of the laid norms for residential areas. The owners have constructed these buildings without getting the building plan approved by the council authorities.
Sudhir Kumar, a member of the team, said, “We have asked the owners to produce their documents.”
Also, owners of these buildings continue to use their establishments as on the name of action, only notices are issued by the council authorities, it is claimed.
“I have been living here since 1960. Illegal commercial buildings have mushroomed here. The administration is turning a blind eye to them despite repeated complaints. Not even a single illegal building has been demolished by the authorities to check the menace,” said Harbinder Singh Sekhon (89), a local resident.
“It is surprising how the authorities have been ignoring this practice here. Defaulters don’t fear the authorities and the buildings are mushrooming in the area. Moreover, how can a commercial building be allowed to come up in a residential area?” asked Jaspal Sharma, a local resident. —
