Niti Aayog report irrational, says Punjab govt

Chandigarh, February 12

The Punjab Government has rejected the Niti Aayog report, wherein it had claimed the state’s per capita income had fallen below the national average.

In a statement, ML Sharma, Economic Adviser to the Punjab Government, said the report was irrational. “While arriving at an average of major states, it has included almost all states that are ahead of Punjab and left out some states that are behind. Moreover, the per capita income of Punjab in real terms was always more than the all-India average. “For the year 2018-19, per capita income of Punjab was 27.45% higher than the all-India average,” he said.

As of 2018-19, Punjab was ranked 10 in real terms of per capita income at the all-India level. Haryana, Uttarakhand, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Himachal Pradesh were ahead of Punjab in terms of real per capita income, he said. — TNS
