The Centre had earlier decided to delay the procurement of paddy under MSP to October 11 in Punjab and Haryana is in the “overall interest of farmers and consumers as well as to accept paddy stock as per FAQ”.
Acceding to the request of Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi to start paddy procurement at the earliest, the Government of India has allowed the State to undertake paddy procurement from October 3.
Expressing gratitude to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his immediate personal intervention to advise the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution in this regard, the Punjab Chief Minister said this decision would be now instrumental in ensuring smooth and hassle free procurement of paddy to the satisfaction of the farmers.
It may be recalled the Chief Minister met Modi yesterday, who had assured him of early resolution of this issue.
Notably, the Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution had taken a decision to postpone the paddy procurement from the October 1, the scheduled date to October 11 at the eleventh hour thus creating unnecessary resentment and confusion amongst the farmers besides putting the state in quandary.
