The Minister of State for Education De Subhas Sarkar has cleared that there was no move to convert Panjab University into a Central University.
He said this in response to a query by AAP Rajya Sabha member Vikramjeet Sawhney on Wednesday.
The minister said: “The Panjab University was established under Punjab University Act, 1947, and is an Inter-state body corporate under provisions of Section 72 of the Panjab Reorganization Act, 1966. As regards conversion of state universities/colleges into central universities, this Ministry has taken a policy decision not to convert such universities into central universities for reasons of legacy issues, adjustment of existing staffs and disaffiliation of affiliated colleges.”
